I would be interested in what you learn . . .

[Just as the last word leaves his mouth, it happens. Where it does is hard to say when the two of them have been relatively still for the encounter. But a bubble somewhere does pop.

In a beautiful city that shines beneath the moonlight, a man speaks to Rufus and his party.

"I'm on nobody's side. I don't plan to become a royalist. If it means achieving my goal, I can be a spy for everyone."

"What's your goal?" ask a girl.

"In a word . . . peace?"

Rufus scoffs. "That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard today."

"It's sad that you just looked down on my value. I don't have time for a serious discussion. You only have 30 minutes." The memory fades out, then back in as it skips and continues. "It's a shortcut to the Tower of Memories—a place where the memories and consciousness of the dead are stored."

The memory skips again, this time settling on Rufus, who asks, "Is this your attempt at controlling us for your plan?"

"It's all right," says the man. "This is . . . nothing more than an act of kindness for the sons of my friend. When I first saw you two, I knew that you were his children."

A teenager starts at those words.

"Hey," he starts, "what are you saying . . . "

"Are you going to deny that you're his son when the same blue flames as your father, Legis, burn within your chest?"

Rufus is quiet.

"I, I don't have a father," stammers the boy.

"Seeing as I don't have blue flames, I must not be his son. How fortunate," says Rufus, blandly.

"Hey, that's not what I mean." The man looks between Rufus and the boy. "I guess things are still awkward between you two. You guys take care of your business."

[He doesn't answer straightaway. It would be nice to move on from a memory once it's been viewed, but few conversations have gone this way since all of this began.]

. . . It's as he said. The sins of mortals are judged after death; in order for that process to take place, the tower removes and stores their memories.

I don't know. That system has nothing to do with me.

But those who've committed sins are made to serve their sentences before they reincarnate.

Everyone has their own opinion.

At the very least, there are no removals involved.

Unfortunately, those blessings have no bearing here.

[It's interesting, all right. The blue flame does not frighten Rufus, but Izumo's reaction in the memory causes his heart to race for a fleeting moment. Schooling his expression to its usual impassivity, he watches Izumo for her response.]

It was just a mention. Its presence was more palpable in yours.

You were engulfed . . . but I don't see burns on you.

. . . You've forgotten.

There's no point in wondering if it has no bearing on the Realm.

I prefer not to dwell on anything that is unnecessary.

What else could they have done in that time? It's a waste.
