There was a disruption. That disruption is like an infection on the Realm. It causes nova to splinter, making you forget things more easily as the infection spreads. Eventually, you forget everything and there's nothing left behind. You're just a shell.
That infection can spread to others and the only way to stop it is to remove the source.
